SnailCam Is An Innovative Detection System
SnailCam is an innovative camera system designed to detect and map snail populations while machinery performs other field tasks. Using advanced object detection and real-time GPS, SnailCam captures images and generates a detailed snail map during operation
The data collected by SnailCam can be used to create a detailed snail heat map
SnailCam’s collected data can be transformed into a detailed snail heat map, providing a clear visual representation of snail hotspots across a field. With this map, farmers can implement variable rate bait spreading, applying higher concentrations of bait in high-density areas while reducing usage in low-density zones. This precision approach optimizes bait usage, reduces environmental impact, enhances pest management efficiency, and lowers overall costs.
Having a detailed snail map also significantly improves harvest management. It allows farmers to identify and harvest snail-infested areas separately, preventing contamination of the entire crop and minimizing the need for extensive grain cleaning.
Developed and tested on a farm in Esperance, Western Australia, the SnailCam system is built for real-world farming conditions. The camera, featuring a magnetic base, can be mounted to any machine traveling up to 30 km/h and is equipped with lights for operation in the dark. The system’s user-friendly software, accessible via a tablet, enables users to easily view detection results, export data, and adjust settings on the go. This combination of advanced hardware and intuitive software makes SnailCam an ideal tool for creating snail heat maps and enabling precise variable rate bait spreading.
